OBSERVATION COMPARISON

TYPE OF OBSERVATION PRODUCT

For the direct viewing of the SUN, in total OPHTHALMIC SAFETY, during an eclipse, it is IMPERATIVE that only SPECIAL EYEGLASSES with a filter certified to the standard "CE no. 89/686" be worn, which filter:

100 % of ultra-violet rays.
100 % of infra-red rays.
99.999 % of light intensity.

The shape of the glasses must be such that they cover both of the user's eyes at the same time.
The glasses must display the following information:
    - manufacturer's name and address.
    - instructions for the use of the glasses to observe the sun or a solar eclipse.
    - always check the glasses are in perfect condition before using them, and if they are not, to destroy
      them.
    - indication that they must not be used with any other optical equipment such as binoculars,
      telescopes or cameras…
    - the "CE" logo and the certification number as well as the details of the approved certifying
      organisation and its approval number.

When all these strict requirements, imposed by the European Community Directive "CE no. 89/686", are met and comply with the international standard on the performance of solar filters, this standard provides astronomers and astrophysicians with guarantees of quality on glasses for the direct viewing of the sun.

As a result, when government authorities contact astronomers and astrophysicians, in their capacity as scientific advisers, the latter, thanks to their competence and knowledge will be able to propose low-cost techniques of ophthalmic safety for the direct viewing of the SUN and SOLAR ECLIPSES, with NO RISK for the ophthalmic safety of the population concerned.

All the other filters NOT CERTIFIED and eclipse glasses from an uncertain manufacture are to be PROSCRIBED and not to be used.
A pair of eclipse glasses with a NOT CERTIFIED filter or a certification of kindness strictly does not offer ANY GUARANTEE to its user.
