This solar eclipse is the NINTH ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE of the 21st century.
It will be visible from two continents:
- ASIA and almost the totality of NORTH AMERICA.
It band of centrality will be visible in the form of an ANNULAR ECLIPSE OF THE SUN from Southern CHINA including MACAO and HONG-KONG – Northern TAIWAN including TAIPEH – it will go along the totality of the Pacific coast of JAPAN – including the megalopolis of TOKYO – and will then cross the NORTHERN PACIFIC over the south of the ALEUTIAN ISLANDS – and end with the West Coast and Centre of the USA first Northern CALIFORNIA and OREGON, then NEVADA, UTAH (Lake Powell), northern ARIZONA and southern COLORADO and finally NEW MEXICO and TEXAS.
This ANNULAR ECLIPSE OF THE SUN will be visible in partial form over a very large part of ASIA including MONGOLIA, RUSSIA, THAILAND, LAOS, VIETNAM, BRUNEI, the PHILIPPINES, SOUTH KOREA, NORTH KOREA and the NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS and the continent of NORTH AMERICA including MEXICO and CANADA.
The popularity and great interest for this ANNULAR ECLIPSE OF THE SUN is that its maximum band of centrality will have an exceptional width of 236 km depending on the country of observation.
With a maximum duration of the annular phase of 5 minutes and 41 seconds, it will be one of the longest ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSES of the 21st century. (Above the North Pacific)
Note that this ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE will cross the International Date Line.
It will start early on 21 MAY 2012 in Southern CHINA and end at the end of 20 MAY 2012 in the USA. That is exceptional and unique.
Because of the rarity of the sight of an annular eclipse, such eclipses are very exciting to observe.
